Why I Stick with This Scanner

I've been using QR Scanner, Read All Barcode for a few months now, mostly for scanning product barcodes while grocery shopping and for decoding QR codes on flyers. It's a no-frills app that reads most common formats quickly, though it doesn't try to be anything more than a scanner. That's actually its strength—no account needed, no ads that interrupt your flow after every scan.

Real-World Scanning Performance

The app's camera detection is snappy. Point your phone at a code and it reads within a second, even in dim lighting. I've tested it with slightly damaged barcodes on wrinkled packages—it still managed to decode most of them. However, it struggles with extremely small codes, like those on some electronic components. If you work with tiny labels, this might be a limitation.

It also handles multiple barcode types—UPC, EAN, Code 128, and others. I've used it to compare prices across stores by scanning items and checking online results. The price lookup isn't built directly into the app; it opens a browser search, which is fine but not as seamless as dedicated shopping apps.

Scanning from Photos: Convenient but Limited

The gallery scan feature in QR Scanner, Read All Barcode is convenient when you receive a QR code as a screenshot. Open the app, tap the gallery icon, select the image, and it highlights the code. It works well for clear images, but blurry or angled screenshots often fail. Also, the app doesn't support batch scanning from multiple images at once—you have to do them one by one.

Honest Downsides

No app is perfect, and this one has a few quirks. First, the built-in QR code generator is basic—it lets you create a code for a URL or text, but you can't customize colors or add a logo. Second, the app occasionally crashes when switching between camera and gallery modes on older Android versions (I tested on Android 10). Third, it doesn't automatically save scan history unless you manually enable that option in settings. For a frequent user, forgetting to toggle that can be annoying.

Despite these drawbacks, QR Scanner, Read All Barcode remains my go-to for quick scans. It's lightweight, loads fast, and doesn't push unnecessary features. If you need a straightforward scanner without the bloat, this one is worth trying.
