The core appeal is that it’s free, ad-free, and lets you tweak almost every visual element without paying a cent.

Scheduling That Actually Works – But Has Limits

Setting up a scheduled SMS in Message Plus is easier than I expected. You compose the message, pick the date and time, and the app sends it automatically even if you’re offline at that moment. I rely on this for weekly reminders to teammates and once used it to send a “good luck” text timed with a friend’s exam start. However, there’s a catch: if your phone restarts or the app gets force-closed, the scheduled messages can fail silently. I lost a couple of reminders before I learned to check the “pending” queue occasionally. It’s a small trade-off for a feature that’s completely free, but you need to keep the app running in the background.

Customization That Doesn’t Feel Gimmicky

Most SMS apps offer themes and bubble styles, but Message Plus actually lets you adjust the font size, bubble shape, and even the emoji set independently. I changed the bubble style to a minimal rounded rectangle and switched emojis to the iOS-style variant because the default ones looked too cartoonish. The night mode is also genuinely dark – not just a gray inversion – which reduces eye strain when I’m texting in bed. On the downside, the sticker and GIF integration relies on a built-in library that hasn’t been updated in months. If you want recent meme GIFs, you’re better off copying from a browser. Also, the customization options can overwhelm a new user; there are 40+ theme presets but no search function, so you end up scrolling quite a bit.

The private conversation encryption is a bit misleading – it hides the conversation behind a PIN lock, but the SMS messages themselves aren’t encrypted on the network (that’s an SMS limitation, not the app’s fault). For everyday privacy, like keeping a sensitive chat out of sight, it does the job. However, the smart classification feature that tries to sort messages into “personal” and “promotions” is unreliable. It often mislabels bank alerts as personal and actual personal notes as promotions. I ended up turning that off after two weeks.

Performance, Compatibility, and Who Should Use It

The app runs smoothly on my mid-range Android phone running Android 12, but I’ve read user reports of crashes on older devices with Android 9 or below. It also doesn’t support RCS, so group chats with iPhone users revert to MMS with limited features. If you need a no-frills texting app with strong visual personalization and scheduled messages, Message Plus is a solid free option. But if you rely on read receipts, typing indicators, or seamless cross-device sync, you’ll be disappointed. It’s best for users who value control over appearance and timing, and who accept that SMS itself has inherent limitations.
