Since 2004, the platform has streamlined the rental process, handling over one million rentals each year. Whether you need extra space for moving, a vacation trip, or just a quick errand, this tool puts a free trailer right in your pocket.

How the App Works

Using the app is straightforward. First, download it and browse the map to find a nearby partner location. Once you select an available trailer or e-bike, you can reserve, pick it up, and unlock it directly through your mobile device. The entire self-service flow takes only a few taps, and returning the item is just as quick. No paperwork, no waiting – just grab what you need and go.

What You Need Before Renting

To borrow a trailer, you must have a valid B driving license and a vehicle that is legally equipped to tow it. Your car must also have liability insurance covering the towing hook. The app clearly outlines these expectations during the booking process. Additionally, only the renter and any listed additional drivers may operate the trailer, and it cannot be used to transport people, animals, or for political or religious activities.

Insurance and Coverage Options

When you rent a trailer through the app, you can choose to add Freetrailer’s own insurance to remove the standard deductible. Without this optional coverage, the excess amounts vary by country – for example, €675 in Germany or 5000 DKK in Denmark. The insurance covers damage to the trailer but excludes theft of the trailer itself, as well as specific parts like locks, batteries, and keys. If you have hull damage to your towing car while using an insured trailer, the app may also help cover that deductible up to a regional limit.

Understanding Availability and Limitations

Your booking is not a guaranteed reservation – if the previous renter hasn’t returned the trailer or it is damaged, Freetrailer is not obliged to provide an alternative. The platform also disclaims liability for any damage the trailer may cause to your vehicle, cargo, or third parties. For theft of goods, you’ll need to rely on your own home contents insurance. Despite these limitations, the app remains a highly practical and cost-free solution for short-term hauling needs across Scandinavia and Germany.
